A fine Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Pottery Dessert Plate printed in the "Rome" Pattern, first introduced by Spode in 1811, and otherwise generally referred to by the alternative title of "Tiber". The view is based on two aquatints by J. Merigot and R. Edwards published in "Views and Ruins in Rome and it's Vicinity" in 1798, the engravings for this design being widely regarded as among Spode's finest. Printed in a medium blue, the main scene is taken from a print entitled "The Castle and Bridge of St. Angelo", with the addition of a tree on the left and another in the centre. The column is inserted from another print entitled "Trajan's Column". The reverse with upper case SPODE printed mark plus what appears to be the astrological sign for Mars, both in underglaze blue, together with the impressed numeral 1.
