From the Prestige series :- This large and fine Mid 20th Century Royal Doulton English Porcelain Figurine, "Jack Point" ~ HN 2080, depicts the strolling Jester from Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy Opera, "The Yeomen of the Guard". Offered here, decorated in a striking multicoloured palette, this superb figure, designed by Doulton's famous Art Director Charles Noke, was issued from 1952 to 2009. The Jester, whose function as an entertainer dates from medieval times, wears the traditional "Fool's" hat with it's three bells, while his livery implies attachment to the Royal household. He stands, wand tucked into his waist, pig's bladder in hand, lute and satchel upon his back, looking pensive, as though mulling over his next outrageous trick. The underside fully marked with the Royal Doulton backstamp in black, plus, in gilt lettering, the title, Jack Point, this in an Old English font, HN.2080, and in black, Painter's Monogram, PS, for Peter Smith, a highly respected Doulton painter. We are delighted to acknowledge confirmation of this identification recently received from Pat Bowen, { née Smallman }, herself a paintress at Doulton and to whom we had previously attributed the painting of this piece, this on the basis of the monogram PS being recorded as hers at the now defunct Royal Doulton Artists website. Pat has explained however that the monogram PS was not available to her as it was already allocated to Peter.
