A good clean copy of "Jewellery Through 7000 Years", first published by The Trustees of the British Museum in 1976, this copy issued in 1978. From amongst the splendid collections at the British Museum, nearly five hundred examples of jewellery representing many civilisations have here been selected and described to give a broad picture of the story of jewellery on a chronological basis. No jewellery indicative of rank - crowns, sceptres etc. - has been included; all is of a personal nature, sometimes highly functional but very often purely ornamental and illustrating Man's personal choice. In addition, three specific categories of jewellery; finger rings, amuletic jewellery and cameos, have been treated separately within their own chronological sequence as they have individual characteristics. A series of short essays introduces each section, and every piece is fully described with it's background history and significance where known. A panoramic survey of this kind highlights both the incredible inventiveness of Man's fertile imagination and, at the same time, the basic, almost primitive qualities that remain a consistent factor throughout the long story of the history of jewellery.
