From the Prestige series ~ A fine and scarce Pair of Late 20th / Early 21st Century Royal Doulton English Porcelain Figurines ~ "Harlequin" ~ HN 2737 and "Columbine" ~ HN 2738, both designed by leading Doulton artist, Douglas V. Tootle, and issued from 1982 to 2009.
Originally appearing as characters in the Italian Commedia dell'arte, Harlequin, the comic servant, is instantly recognisable in his multicoloured chequered costume, while Columbine, the wife of Pierrot, who is also Harlequin's mistress in the Italian comedy, strikes a lively pose in her flowered pink and blue dress.
