A good clean First Edition copy, signed by the author, of "George Stubbs and the Wedgwood Connection", by Dr. Ruth Vincent-Kemp, published in a limited edition of 2000 by Rushton and Turner of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire in 1986. With Foreword by Dr. Erasmus Darwin Barlow, this erudite work of scholarship reveals the hitherto somewhat opaque relationship between the artist and the potter. Already an artist of considerable repute, Stubbs, around the year 1771, while experimenting with metallic oxides and ground glass, produced nineteen tints of special enamel paint. During the rest of the decade, Wedgwood endeavoured to produce ceramic plaques or tablets for Stubbs to paint upon using these enamels, which tablets would stand the multiple firings required to "set" the colours correctly within the kiln. This difficult and expensive task is evidenced by the fact that only 37 such enamelled plaques were ever painted by Stubbs, who during a three month sojourn at Etruria Hall in 1780 painted the famous group portrait of Josiah Wedgwood and his family which now hangs in the Wedgwood Museum, and which was painted in payment for the work entailed in producing the plaques. In Wedgwood's own words "...we will take the payment in paintings". Soft covers, some 64 pages, black and white illustrations plus one full colour plate.
